Where in the World should you study Global Media?
UGA at Oxford in England - Summer 2010


International Communication (JRLC 5080) is about world media—comparing philosophies of different systems, discussing development or regulation of these systems, and questioning how these systems interact and impact communication flows.

All forms of global communication platforms will be discussed: print, electronic, advertising, public relations, and social media.

Offered as a multicultural course, this course is available to students across disciplines within the Grady College and at the University of Georgia.

Site visits to media houses in London and Oxford will be part of the course. Other media guests will be invited.

Professor: Dr. Leara Rhodes, Associate Professor of Journalism in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, UGA.

Dr. Rhodes has 15 years teaching and research experience at UGA with emphasis in international communication.

Accommodations:


60 students (approximately 20 each from the three colleges) will be housed either at historic Trinity College or the University of Georgia at Oxford Center. Trinity College, Oxford University, was founded in 1555 and is one of Oxford's most distinguished colleges. Trinity College is ideally located in the center of the city and has been praised by students for its architectural beauty and friendly atmosphere. The University of Georgia's at Oxford Center in located in North Oxford. The large, recently-furbished rooms hold two to four students and most have private bathrooms. All students will have access to the Trinity College dining hall, common rooms, computer labs and network, and college pub.

Course, Credit, and Eligibility:
Students can earn six semester hours in a wide variety of disciplines. Tutorials will be taught using the tutorial format of individualized or small-group instruction. Tutorial groups are never larger than three students. Each tutorial class includes an excursion to a site in England related to the major themes in the course. Terry:

You will take the mandatory seminar, INTB 5100, with UGA’s Terry faculty member and one course with an Oxford faculty member.

Grady:
You will take either two courses from Oxford faculty or you will take the Grady seminar, JRLC 5080, taught by UGA’s Grady faculty member and one course taught by an Oxford faculty member.

Franklin:

You will take two courses taught by Oxford faculty.

Costs:


Approximately $6,880 plus in-state UGA tuition and fees. The cost of the program covers Oxford and Trinity College fees, room, most meals, study abroad insurance, and class excursions. Additional expenses include cost of personal items and travel. A voluntary group-rate flight is available. (Transient students are subject to an additional admission fee assessed by UGA Undergraduate Admissions.)


Enrollment:
The Franklin Summer Program is open to all majors!


Students should provide a completed application form and a recent transcript of grades. A refundable $600 application fee will be added to the UGA Students Account System upon receipt of application. Enrollment will be limited to well-qualified students. Students are required to turn in applications on or before Friday, 22 January 2010 ; applications will be accepted after this date only if all positions are not filled. Application forms and other information are available in the UGA at Oxford office, 326A Park Hall or online. Deposits are refundable until Friday, 5 March 2010.

Grady Seminar:

Dr. Leara Rhodes, Associate Prof., Grady College

Objective of the course is to learn about mass media of the world—what they are like, how they operate, and what impact they have. Philosophies of different systems will be compared, as well as efforts at development or regulation of these systems. Attention will be given to print, electronic, advertising, public relations, broadcast and international news agencies. Learning about different cultures is a part of the process.

Grady Faculty:

Dr. Leara Rhodes, Associate Professor in Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, teaches magazine writing, publishing, international communications, race and gender in the media, and mass communication theory, while her research focuses on media in transitional governments with emphasis on Haiti and the Caribbean. She is the author of /Democracy and the Role of the Haitian Media/ and the forthcoming /Ethnic Press: Reshaping the American Dream/. She has received many teaching awards including the Outstanding Professor Award by National Panhellenic Council (2008), Haitian Studies Association Award for Service (2006), Grady College Roland Page Graduate Teacher of the Year (2006), Barry Bingham Sr. Fellowship for leadership in education and attracting minority students into journalism careers by the National Conference of Editorial Writers Foundation (2004), and the First Annual UGA Diversity Award for exemplary efforts toward advancing UGA’s mission of diversity and academic excellence (2004).
